Off the coast of West Africa, Madeira makes an ancient wine style which has never been more relevant, matching wonderfully to diverse cuisines, but also acting as a palate-awakening aperitif. The main grape varieties are Tinta Negra, with Sercial, Verdelho, Boal and Malvasia.
Madeira is a fortified wine (made in the same way as port) but undergoes a process of very slow heating and cooling which gives it a unique flavour.
This Madeira from producer Barbeito is super fresh, not cloying but crisply sweet. Full bodied and rich. Delicious.
