The illustrious Montresor family moved from France to Italy at the start of the 19th Century, and settled in the Veneto region near Lake Garda. In 1892 Cantina Giacomo Montresor was established in Verona, and remains family-owned to this day.
Giorgio Montresor produces a portfolio of wines which increasingly rival the offerings of the region’s more fashionable names – harnessing modern technology to craft the best wines from each site, across their 100ha of vineyard, in Valpolicella and Garda.
This wine is a Valpolicella ‘Ripasso’, a process whereby the grapes used to make Amarone are passed through the much lighter Valpolicella wine. A secondary fermentation takes place which imparts some of the richness and sweet cooked fruit flavours of the much more expensive Amarone.
This Ripasso has powerful and complex aromas of morello cherry, almond, cinammon and wood smoke which gives an attractive first impression.
The palate unveils an array of heady red fruit, musk, spices and vanilla on the palate.
A generous wine – as ripasso should be.
Grape varieties – 60% Corvina Veronese / 30% Rondinella / 10% Molinara
